This may be my all-time favorite story that I’ve written to date. I used to work in state government, and I’ve actually written web copy and form instructions of a similar vein. I think I was channeling frustration after a day of “We’re the government, and we’re here to help”-type meetings full of double-speak and circular thinking. Around the same time, I was also a fan of the show Fringe, though I was frustrated by the illogicalness of the fourth season’s alternate universe story line (Faux Livia, anyone???). Out of those two things came a “what if” scenario: what if two alternate realities were collapsing in on themselves. How would the government respond? They would, of course, set up a self-service website that provides no help whatsoever, while assuming an upbeat, cheerful tone to tell you of your impending doom.

This story was also my first short story to be published, though it was accepted for publication AFTER The "Lady and the Unicorn." However, the anthology "The Lady and the Unicorn" was first supposed to appear in (Live Free or Dragons) was delayed for several years and Dear Robot came out first. Just one of the quirks of publishing that one’s first acceptance might not also be one’s first publication credit.
